What is the difference between Mia Femtech® and traditional breast augmentation?
Mia Femtech® uses a patented 2 cm access technique, purpose-designed Mia Femtech® Diamond implants and instruments that place the implant through a small underarm incision, typically in under an hour. Traditional breast augmentation uses a 4–5 cm inframammary or periareolar incision, a wider range of implant shapes and sizes, and usually needs one to two weeks of downtime.
How Mia Femtech® works
Mia Femtech® is not a new implant on its own, and it is not simply a smaller scar. It is a system: a specific implant (the Mia Femtech® Diamond, from the Motiva® Ergonomix2® family), a specific delivery instrument, a specific incision location and a defined surgical protocol. Every part of the system is designed to keep the tissue disruption as small as possible.
In practical terms, here is what happens on the day of your procedure.
- You arrive at the clinic and meet your surgical team. Final markings and photos are taken.
- Your anaesthetic is given as agreed at your consultation; the operation itself is short.
- A 2 cm incision is made in the discreet crease in your underarm.
- The pocket is created with instruments designed to minimise bleeding and trauma.
- The Mia Femtech® Diamond implant is introduced through a dedicated injector device, which reduces contact between the implant and the skin.
- The incision is closed in layers, and you are moved to recovery.
The active surgical time is usually short. Most patients go home the same day.
Why “15 minutes” is only part of the story
You may have seen Mia Femtech® described as a 15-minute procedure. That figure refers to the core implant-insertion step under the patented technique, not the whole appointment. Realistically, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, you should plan for a couple of hours at the clinic.
The patented access technique
The patented element of Mia Femtech® is the combination of a small, laterally placed incision and a purpose-built insertion sleeve for the Mia Femtech® Diamond implant. Three details matter here:
- Incision size and location. At 2 cm, the scar is roughly half the length of a conventional inframammary scar. Its underarm location keeps it out of the visible cleavage line and in a natural skin fold.
- Injector. The Mia Femtech® Diamond implant is delivered through a no-touch air-compressed injector, so it does not touch the surgeon’s hand or the skin edges. This is thought to reduce bacterial contamination, which is one of the factors linked to capsular contracture in longer-term data.
- Tissue-sparing pocket dissection. Because the implant is smaller and softer than many traditional devices, the pocket needed to hold it is also smaller. Less dissection generally means less bruising and a quicker recovery.
Mia Femtech® Diamond implants are soft silicone gel implants from the Motiva® Ergonomix2® family, made in a smaller, defined size range specifically for the Mia Femtech® system. If you want dramatic volume changes or a specific projection profile, the Mia Femtech® range may not cover your goals, and a traditional augmentation with a wider implant selection might be more appropriate.
Who Mia Femtech® suits
Mia Femtech® is a considered choice, not a universal one. It works best for women who want a natural-looking increase in breast size and are willing to work within the Mia Femtech® implant range in exchange for a smaller scar and faster recovery.
The typical candidate profile
- Want a moderate increase in volume
- Have fairly symmetrical breasts
- Have little or no ptosis (sagging)
- Have enough pinchable tissue
You are less likely to be a suitable candidate if you want a very large volume increase, need significant correction of breast asymmetry or ptosis (droop), or would benefit from a shaped anatomical implant. In those cases, a traditional breast augmentation, an uplift, or a combined augmentation-mastopexy is likely to suit you better, even though the scars and downtime will be greater.
Choosing between the two
The right choice depends on your anatomy, your goals, and how much weight you place on scar size and recovery time against the broader range of implant options traditional augmentation offers.

Recovery and downtime
Recovery is where Mia Femtech® genuinely differs from traditional breast augmentation. Because the incision is smaller and the tissue disruption is limited, most patients feel comfortable much sooner. That said, healing is still healing, and you should plan properly.
The first 24 hours
You will be discharged the same day, typically a few hours after surgery. You should have someone drive you home and stay with you overnight. Expect some tightness across the chest and mild soreness at the incision site rather than sharp pain. Your surgeon will advise you on suitable pain relief.
Days 1 to 7
You can usually move around the house comfortably from the first day. You should wear a soft post-surgical bra day and night. Avoid lifting anything heavier than a kettle, and keep your arms below shoulder height for the first week.
Weeks 2 to 4
Many patients will already be back at desk-based work, often within a few days of surgery. Light walking is encouraged from day one, but you should hold off on yoga for around three to four weeks, and on running and chest workouts for around five to six weeks. Driving usually resumes once you can perform an emergency stop without hesitation, typically inside the first two weeks.
Weeks 4 to 12
By six weeks most restrictions lift, and by 12 weeks most of the settling has happened, although final settling can continue for three to six months. Swelling continues to reduce gradually, and the scar begins to fade. You should continue to sleep on your back where possible for the first six weeks.
Your recovery timeline is not a competition. If yours runs slightly longer than the averages above, that is normal. Follow the guidance your surgeon gives you rather than what you read on forums.
Implant longevity and follow-up
Implant warranty terms are set by the manufacturer, and your surgeon will explain what applies to your implants. In practical terms, modern silicone implants are not lifetime devices, but they are designed to last many years without routine replacement.
